Fermin Tara: I love my college dance team experience. However the level of commitment is much higher than high school was. In high school, practices were worked in a few days a week. In college, we met all 5 weekdays for 1 hour, an extra 3 hours on Thursdays, and for 2 hours Saturday mornings before football games. Not to mention being at the games 2-3 hours early, performing in pep rallys, and performing as "exhibitions" at high school marching band competitions.The hardest part for me was being a self motivator. It is up to you to make sure you get to the gym 3 times a week, to make sure you stretch, to make sure you've learned the 3rd field routine, etc. The captain (and sponsor if you have one) expects you to get everything done without being babied the whole way. If you don't, you won't perform that week. The rewards outweigh the negatives as there is no better feeling than a standing! ovation from high school girls who hope to be in your shoes one day. Some of my best friends are girls I met in dance team. You'll start college already knowing many people. You'll have a sense of a place where you belong (can be hard to find when you first come to college). You'll travel places you've never been. You'll learn to teach high school teams (and sometimes get paid for that). If you go out for captain, you'll learn leadership skills as well as communication and organization.It's hard work, but it was an experience like no other....Show more
