There is a 95% energy loss from solar power as it is transferred to storage batteries and then converted from that voltage to house voltage. Luke Kosch: there are several methods of doing this. I don't think I saw the Nat. Geographic one, but I've seen several others. Sorting the trash is a major issue - it takes space and an expensive infrastructure to start up - and they are still improving the systems that separate metals, plastics etc. One that I saw burned paper and petroleum products under high molten metal with added gases as needed to produce a synfuel. The heated metal was produced by burning additional free products from waste. (very expensive set-up - but effective - positive energy flow from waste.)Another process didn't sort the trash and simply did what most landfills do today - vent off the methane - but instead of wasting it, they used it to power up some turbines and produce electricity - very efficient and this should be copied everywhere as far as I can tell. Great topic - we need to think about our huge amounts of waste as a hig! hly effective potential fuel source.I don't see this as a replacement of gasoline directly, as I think the petro fuel vehicles need to be a thing of the past. This may not seem bad, but consider the fact that copious amounts of water, fertilizers and land are needed in this process and you have a series of spin-off problems associated with it as well.... and that's not even factoring the effect of presumably higher food prices (especially for corn and other crops that can be turned into ethanol).As for the free market, it can also have its problems. Take water trading for example (which is one example I'm most familiar with). A farmer may use only 60% of his allocation one year.... but may sell the unused portion on a temporary basis. It seems fair... he is only using 60% but has the water right for the whole thing. He is just acting a profit maximizer. However, that extra 40% will be! used, meaning LESS return flows and MORE water being diverted! . Water trading could actually result in MORE water scarcity (unless of course, environmental hold backs ensure it won't). If you do the same thing to petroleum (or ethanol), the obvious problem will ensue. Fuel prices will drastically decrease under perfect competition, but the fuel sources will be exhausted very quickly creating dire long term consequences. You may not like it, I may not like it... but let's face it we don't pay the TRUE cost for fuel. We pay extremely cheap prices for fuel. You pay less for gasoline than you do a bottle of water or orange juice.... For example, let's say gas is $5.00/gallon (something most people would piss and moan about) but that gallon will take you 20 miles. Well let's go with the next best option... hiring a horse and buggy (for example) to take you 20 miles..... do you reasonably think the driver is going for the low price of $5 for 20 miles? Even factoring in the price of the vehicle, mainentnace, etc.... for what you dri! ve and what fuel you consume it is about 100X more cost-effective than most other solutions. Heck... even if gas was $10.00 a gallon, it would STILL be cheaper than most other alternatives....Show more

Imagine the size and complexity of the vehicle - a wood fired steamer on the road. Production, felling, cutting and transporting the wood to the user would use a lot of fuel as well. It looks like they are driving around with a hot water cylinder standing up. The engine sounds like a diesel. I would expect a steam engine to be quieter, but there is no indication of how it works. When he stops to refuel the vehicle you will notice a bit of smoke coming from the top of the burner. They are one car in the middle of the woods. I have been in small third world nation communities where the primary fuel is charcoal or wood. When used in a valley with little air movement the pollution can be quite intense. The problem is still the same. You are attempting to use heat to drive a vehicle. It will therefore be subject to the inefficiencies of ! any heat engine. Fuel burns and produces pollutants. To maxi! mize the motive force for the minimum amount of pollution requires an efficient engine. The electric vehicle is not a heat engine. it has a high efficiency not possible with any heat engine. We can save our fuels for doing what they are most efficient at doing: making heat to keep us warm in cold climates. With this you can be two kinds of "green." Christy Tirabassi: My son goes here. I have two things to tell you about Macker. FIRST GOOD: I have 3 children who audtioned an only he was accepted. They gave them a small little script to remember and he was very enthusiasctic about it. So they only wanted to accept him. Also we have no credit cards we pay cash all the time. They worked with us as far as a down payment and monthly payments. Their are students that go there who have been in big name movies like Santa Clause 3...... BAD: but they got the parts on their own. Macker does not get you parts, jobs or any sort of work, they! just give you classes like you can get at a rec. center or wh! at not. I have no idea what sort of things my son does in class they never keep you updated informed or anything like that. They keep you informed of when you need to pay. That is the only time we ever get calls or info from them. They are always having different teachers because the teachers that come thru get jobs and quit. My son does not seem motivated when he comes out of class. We are paying a total of almost $3,000 for the 2 years of classes!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is what my son wanted to do. We signed a contract so we need to keep paying and have him in the classes but are unhappy with Macker. Basil Blasingame: I hardly consider National Review unbiased, but what the author fails to take into account is that the unemployment rate in Ohio is well below the national average because Obama did exactly what Mitt counseled against, namely saving the automobile industry. Unless Obama had acted boldly to provide interim and permanent financing to GM and Chrysler they would have seen their Chapter 11 reorganization plans rejected by the US Bankruptc! y Court and they would have been converted into Chapter 7 liquidations.! That would have shut down Ford too since no auto supplier, not their suppliers, could have survived without having GM and Chrysler operating as going concerns. With the Big Three auto makers in liquidation followed by all the auto supply chains, the economy in the Midwest would have contracted into a deep depression affecting the rest of the country, e.g. auto dealerships, tire companies, auto parts stores like NAPA, Mom and Pop auto repair shops, et cetera all would have folded in the resulting chaos. It is precisely because Obama stepped up to save GM and Chrysler while Mitt was doing the private equity side-step that saved Ohio and Michigan's economy. Obama is the reason why those jobs are still in Ohio and Michigan and not in China.
