Newton Fedorko: Head Smashed In and the Vore Buffalo site in Wyoming have both been evacuated and studied. Vore has a bone pile some 25 feet thick. Dr. George Frison evacuated Vore and I had a three hour tour of the site with him.The use of the jumps can be dated. Vore was used 1500 to 1800 and Head Smashed in dates back some 65,700 years. and was used until the 1800s.Dating is possible both by carbon 14 testing and the seasonal winter deposits left by winters. Muck like tree rings the precipitates give a yearly measurement.Jumps were not in constant use. There appear to be factors such as herd size, rainfall and availability of people. Fifteen to twenty-five years appears to have been the average cycle. The herd(s) had to be carefully moved along set trails. At a certain point they were stampeded towards the jump. Leading the herd was a female. While she could stop at the brink, the stampede behind her pushed her over. The conservation is arguable. There was systematic but! chering and preparing the meat, however, there were tons more meat then could be processed. Often just getting to the bottom of the bodies was impossible. Likely more meat spoiled then was used.Complicating the harvest was the need to process the meat, then move to the winter encampments. Some tribes moved hundreds of miles to reach theirs. Further, the harvest was in the fall when the animals had heavy hides and had stocked up on fat for the winter. So "should be used to its fullest, and that conservation of it ensures later food supply" really doesn't match the jumps. More appropriate would be the harvest of camas in the Northwest. People knew where the plants grew and made it a practice to leave the biggest plants to reseed the next years crop....Show more
