Why don't environmentalists tell people that they save money by living Green?

Nikita Schroepfer: We live almost exclusively off solar power. With the exception of geothermal and nuclear ( even that is arguable). All sources even fossil fuels rely or relied on the sun to be produced. The ultimate in solar energy is to build collectors in space in orbit around the Earth and beam the energy down to ground stations as tight beam microwaves. It's doable and on the drawing board. As for having to cover all the land mass of the world to supply 74% of the required energy, that's just laughable. There is enough energy in a good sized hurricane or typhoon to power the Earth for a decade and they are produced by solar power....Show more

Pasty Cobbett: A large portion of our waste is burned, but this produces some nasty emissions and there is still a need for landfills to put the portion of our waste that doesnt get burned.

Paul Maymi: 1

Chastity Doderer: who knows? You can't reason with the in-your-face greenies.

Merlin Fleischhacker: It! 's all just to impress the press.I do expect a "Best Answer" rating from you, for my quick response.

Donnell Nocella: It is probably more expensive and harder to conciously live green.I'm a republican and never will. lol.Just live green and be happy if it makes you happy.Dont try to push ideals such as these on others or you might give your cause a bad name.

Amada Greising: Living green has not saved us money but in fact cost us money, I would rather environmentalist keep to themselves and pick up garbage on the side of the road.

Filiberto Amauty: I can't speak for all but I do. My personal bent is that if GW is real it's only a very small reason for caring about the environment. Believing or not believing doesn't qualify one as an idiot - I know smart people and dumb people on both sides - so I personally wouldn't make that claim.Greening my life has saves me bunches of bucks. There are a few items that I pay more for (ex.: organic eggs are $0.68/dozen ! more) but those items are few and the added cost is still FAR ! less than what I save in water, power, gas, and misc. expenses....Show more

Wilfredo Muldoon: lol.... we learn something every day!

Jude Kennelly: Please explain. If not, are there any other renewable energy sources we could live off of? What are some pros/cons off living off of renewable energy? Thanks!

Carolynn Testani: There's more than sufficient power falling on the Earth but with current technology, it's simply costs a lot more than fossil fuels. Of course, the true costs of fossil fuels are much higher than the price we pay. If you accept the higher costs of current solar power, you first have to dramatically decrease your energy usage. It would be best to do so before actually switching to solar. In reality, we won't see an end to fossil fuel use till there is a source less expensive than coal. Fortunately there is one called Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors which is far safer than conventional nuclear, it can not melt down, it can not explo! de, it can not leak, it shuts down with no power, it requires no power to shut down, and it actually would consume existing nuclear wastes....Show more

Benny Stehno: because you don't save money. all the alternatives cost more. Thats why.

Luther Plagmann: any money saved will be taken in extra 'carbon taxes' sponsored by BIG GREEN Al Gore

Freddy Shutler: Why can't we do this all the time????? This will help everyone with the price of gasoline. Any thoughts appreciated.......??>>

Jed Mutone: with the Fischer-Tropsch process we can make ethanol from trash, sewage, AG waste, old tires. ecthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer-Tro...http://www.jennifermarohasy.com/blog/arc...http://www.hart-isee.com/index.php?page=...http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/bu...the best part is no more land fills or treated sewage water putting drug and chemical in our rivers.plus about 75% of the hazardous waste in the US can be used as feed for this process....Show more!

Reyes Brunell: You can do it if you are willing to not have a lo! t of stuff, other than lights. There is a 95% energy loss from solar power as it is transferred to storage batteries and then converted from that voltage to house voltage. If you wanted to switch to all twelve volt appliances you can save some but don't count on the stuff working on into the night when the batteries die and there is no sun to generate more energy for you. Plus, make sure your batteries are isolated real good cause there is an explosion hazard....Show more

Dalia Causby: There are a few installations which have separation sheds where the garbage of the day is culled for glass, metals, plastics, ceramics and other non-combustibles.( The garbage has no animal or vegetable matter). The plastics go for further recycling and converted to other home and building products. The remaining paper, cardboard, wood , fiber etc now feed the furnaces which will produce steam for heating and running generators which produce electricity. The waste gas from the distillation! of oil into fuel is also being used in the distillation or diverted to fuel a steam generating plant which also produces electricity. The gas was once sent through a system where it was burned. The old NJ refineries were a prime example of this waste, and one could see the flaming standpipes for miles.....Show more

Corrina Faro: Because we get sick of people denying the truth in order to save themselves hassle. It gets fairly frustrating to talk to someone and tell them the world is dying and see that they don't care. Sometimes we get carried away because it is so hard to see people ignoring reality and hoping it will go away when every second we wait means it might be too late to balance the climate again. These people are going to regret their actions in twenty years but by then it will be too late.If I talk about global climate change (not warming, since some places will actually get colder or just go into a 50-year drought or just have 50 more inches of rai! n a year) I don't usually do the gloom talk or call people idiots-altho! ugh I may think it ;-). I've realized that people are inherently selfish and so I do tell people it's cheaper or easier. Of course it's cheaper to put in a few solar panels and not buy electricity for forever. It's cheaper to wash a few dish cloths rather than constantly buy paper towels. They even pay you to take recyclables back. People don't listen though. They want to believe what they want to believe and will find every way possible of ignoring anything that isn't their version of truth....Show more

Venetta Coulbourne: We could IF we had a cheap enough way to store energy. Batteries are still too expensive.

Fred Caminita: Can I get a realistic estimate of how much people are interested in green living? How many do you think there are? I would crudely estimate that millions of people are genuinely into it. By "genuine", I mean that they're into it enough in order to act on it in their daily living. I estimate one million because there are 314 million p! eople in America and I think that 1 in every 300 would probably be a good guess. But what about other places like Canada? In Canada, recycling and composting is part of normal, everyday living, but how many people are actually hardcore green fanatics and not just people following the norm? How many green fanatics do you think there are worldwide? Please give a suitable number.PS: By "fanatic", I'm not referring to the negative connotations (like extremism) usually associated with the word. I'm referring only to people who are into it enough to actually recycle and consider it when making decisions....Show more

Joey Mekeel: @John W: Whoever said that I was trying to denigrate anybody for not being green. I completely know and understand why making some sacrifices associated with green living would be too big a pill to swallow for most people. I'm just curious in knowing how many people actually make their honest best effort (even if it's only a little) to live a green l! ifestyle. It's more about statistics than it is about ranting and forci! ng people to convert. I just need the statistic is all.

Luke Kosch: there are several methods of doing this. I don't think I saw the Nat. Geographic one, but I've seen several others. Sorting the trash is a major issue - it takes space and an expensive infrastructure to start up - and they are still improving the systems that separate metals, plastics etc. One that I saw burned paper and petroleum products under high molten metal with added gases as needed to produce a synfuel. The heated metal was produced by burning additional free products from waste. (very expensive set-up - but effective - positive energy flow from waste.)Another process didn't sort the trash and simply did what most landfills do today - vent off the methane - but instead of wasting it, they used it to power up some turbines and produce electricity - very efficient and this should be copied everywhere as far as I can tell. Great topic - we need to think about our huge amounts of waste as a hig! hly effective potential fuel source.I don't see this as a replacement of gasoline directly, as I think the petro fuel vehicles need to be a thing of the past. The methane fueled electric producing turbine could surely add to the electrical grid and electric vehicles won't be too far away if fuel prices stay high....Show more

Chris Rosenkranz: Lots of things you can do to be more "Green" can save you money, and I do here other people say that you can save money by living green. Well, everybody knows about the light bulbs now, the CFLs (Compact fluorescent lights). They cost two-three times more than the old bulbs but last Five, or more, times longer AND use less wattage but are just as bright. Being more green can be just saving electricity. You can just cut back or better yet get better, or more, insulation for your home so that your air doesn't run as much but you stay just as cool or warm. I don't expect anyone, including myself, to go completely green but there ar! e some that won't even do the things to help themselves and their famil! ies just because someone calls it being "environmentally friendly". Those people are just stubborn and think "Oh they are hippies", and that Is being stupid....Show more

Eli Trapeni: initially, ouch. Environmentalists do a lot to make the international a greater useful place, to make YOUR international a greater useful place and don't get a large variety of thank you from human beings. I evaluate myself quite of an environmentalist and confident, I wash I do each thing in my skill to shrink my spending, to shield water, I recycle, i don't stayed glued to electronics, I improve my very very own foodstuff and that i walk or journey a motorbike as quickly as I can. there are circumstances once you're able to desire to %. and choose your battles. to thoroughly bypass off the grid does not continually help. without electronics or the flexibility to commute, how could anyone have the flexibility to do their jobs? How could human beings get the be conscious out with referenc! e to our surroundings? there's a large distinction between an extremist and an environmentalist. and how precisely are they making your existence depressing? they don't pay too a lot concept into you're petty inconveniences they're too busy making the planet greater healthy :)...Show more

Vernon Martorana: That is one of my favorite points to make. I don't argue about Global Warming, I have no idea if it what they say is true. I was green long before I heard the term. When the 1st principal is reduce how can it not save money. You don't have to go out and spend money on solar panels or live like a cave man to reduce the amount of energy you use. We have so many things in our home that use electricity with no benifit to use. Almost all electronics use standby energy, we have many things that have batteries that we charge 24/7 when they only need to charge once a week. I cut my electric bill by at least $50 a month by using a power cord with a switch to plug in my tv,vc! r, stereo and game system. I also unplug chargers when they aren't char! ging. No decline in lifestyle there.I save money also be switching to durable reusable items instead of disposable one use items. I haven't had to buy disposable plates for our bbq's for years instead I have a selection of heavy duty plastic plates that will last for years.I save money and reduce my exposure to questionable chemicals with natural cleaning products, it cost about 50 cents to make a bottle of window cleaner instead of paying over $3 for windex and I don't have to worry about amonia damaging my lungs. ...Show more

Matt Tiry: They do!

Vern Serratos: NO.We simply have no reliable way yet to store the Energy. If you give up a lot of modern technology then yes an individual household could.

Magda Vandergriend: probably 29489748i am

Brian Freedland: well: i know About Green Living because it is very important withAnswers Environment says we must Conserve Energy plus protect The Earth's Environmental For Wildlife Natural Habbitatvisit http://! www.greenliving.org and please! help to keep the city clean

Joesph Smithmyer: Solar power, while seeming like a wonderful and simple alternative to a problem that has been plaguing the human race, is completely unattainable for long-term use. With current solar power technology completely covering the entire landmass of the planet with solar panels would only provide sufficient power for about 74% of the world. Just like wind power, solar power is just a phrase Greenpeace activists and other uneducated people use to fight against things like coal and nuclear power. The reality of the matter, though, is that we're going to need enormous advances in our sustainable technology in order to make solar, wind, biofuel, geothermic, or any other kind of power dominant enough to replace coal or nuclear. So no, there's no renewable energy source we can live off as a human race. It's just completely unrealistic....Show more

Lana Uliano: Can we live entirely off of solar powe! r?Yes, as far as Heat and light from Generated Electricity, along with ! Wind , and Water. Burnable fuels have been in use since human kind first walked the earth, simply because knowledge of other means of artificial light, and heat did not exist. Since man first discovered that some gasses and many solids would combine with oxygen to produce light and heat, it was natural for man to search for better combustibles then candle wax and wood. Of course Whale oil came before Oil Wells. The great thinkers of the past knew nothing of the discoveries that would occur in the 20th century. The Internal Combustion Engine won out over Electric, and Steam Engines because of mans laziness, and an abundance of cheap fuel from petroleum oil. That and the discovery of nuclear power has caused more damage to our planet from pollution in the last century then all the other centuries combined. In modern times we have found many other ways of producing non polluting heat, and light with out burning Fossil Fuels. Many of these are not always present 24 hours a da! y, or depend on the presents of moving water. The most promising is Solar Power, which could not do the job with the early low out put cells. There has been great strides in the improvement of these cells. Today we are already using water, wind, and solar. From people installed their own panels on their roofs, and some industries also, to solar farms being built in the desert. I don’t know about other countries, but It is happening here despite the efforts of the oil companies to put a stop to the technology. In time we will no longer need fossil fuels or nuclear power for generation of Electricity....Show more

Darren Heling: the sad part is that every major landfill in the u.s. has methane stacks that come out of the ground and they burn it what a wastethats soooo much energy wasted its crazy

Francisco Schonhardt: i am . www.himinsun.com

Nikki Sypult: You can save money by living Green and even earn money by going green as well. Check this reference fo! r great ideas:

Malcom Fenoff: There's interested and then there's! capable of changing their livelihoods. Most people are bound by their jobs and where they can afford to work and live. This limits their contributions to perhaps using public transit, insulating their homes, choosing local produce, purchasing products made with recycled materials ( recycling bins isn't recycling, buying recycled products is ). Very few people have a job where they can choose to live in a remote earthship far from a business centre. The norm is where the people are because few can afford to live any differently, and if they did then how would the world function?I think you have an idealistic idea of what you can expect the majority of people to be able to do and you're trying to denigrate everyone else other than yourself for the state of the world. Work first at structuring your own life to be "green" before counting the numbers....Show more
